Italian to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general) / neurology (nerve function)
Italian term or phrase: SPI
This abbreviation appears in a report of a nerve conduction test. Different motor and sensory nerves are being stimulated and tested in a patient who was hospitalized for muscle weakness and tingling in the hands and feet.

This test comes under "Conduzioni Motorie". The following nerves are being tested: mediano sx, ulnare sx, spe dx ... and then comes *spi dx* and *spi sx*.

I have seen 'spi nerve' in a few English neurology texts, but 1) I'm not sure if it's correct to leave it as is, and 2) I would like to know what SPI stands for.

Grazie per l'aiuto!

To quote a totally reliable source (Karin Band) from the ITI med/pharm e-group:

... it would appear that, like FR, IT and ES also contain anatomical
terms that would cause problems if translated literally into languages
that gave up similar nomenclatures some time ago. (Gray's 31/e of 1954
vs Gray's 39/e of 2005 makes interesting reading in this respect.)
Example: the FR '(nerf) sciatique poplité externe' (abbr. 'SPE') -
found in IT as '(nervo) sciatico popliteo esterno (SPE)'; and
in ES as '(nervio) ciático poplíteo externo (CPE)'.
In EN, it is the 'common peroneal nerve' AKA 'common fibular nerve'...

Notes to answerer
Asker: J'ai trouvé le 'nerf tibial' merci! Reading anatomy descriptions is challenging enough in English .... (I think I would NEVER attempt it in German, though ... I don't know what it would do to my brain.) Grazie per le informazioni!

agree  Dr. Jason Faulkner: That's the one. Makes more sense on an electrodiagnostic study report. I couldn't figure out why they would break the sciatic nerve down so such a level. Tibial nerve makes a lot more sense.

Asker: Si ... veramente e' italiano! Thanks for catching that, Liz ... I forgot to change my KudoZ question settings after my last bout with Spanish. This gave Dr. Faulkner a chance to try his expertise on an Italian question :)

Asker: Yes Liz...I think you should resist the urge to forgo answering Italian questions!
