From a patient report (histological examination) regarding the excision of a leiomyosarcoma from the right thigh. The source text says:

Massa di 17x12x8 cm comprendente su di un versante fascia aponeurotica, con batuffolo presso un apice (polo prossimale) ed area superficiale tatuata con inchiostro di china...

Would batuffolo in this context mean that a "swab" was taken? Or that the mass is morphologically similar in appearance to a cotton ball?
