That's possible, in fact, as I made an error, too: Finding mal-tracking with increased flexion is not really an option as the patella moves medially with increasing flexion, and deviates laterally in the more extended joint positions ;-)

Hi Anne,

If I understand what I'm reading online, knees are scanned while in flexion. So maybe the text is just saying that at the particular angle of flexion that they used (but not "various" angles), they then came up with this particular finding? The Italian says "ai gradi di flessione" ... the degrees of flexion.

I keep stumbling into areas of medicine that I don't know anything about! Thanks for all your input.

Then it is a mystery, again. I am not aware of MRI being performed in various grades of flexion.

Ah - it's never too late to learn! I was caught in esterna = external, but with Katarina's esterna = lateral (in your other query www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/medical_general/63634... the statement starts making sense: It seems to refer to mal-tracking of the patella, as in chondromalacia or runner's knee, where the patella is increasingly pulled laterally (and thus pressed against the lateral slope of the sulcus) when the knee is being flexed.

While I can't see a good reason to make a statement about "rotula in iperpressione..." in an ultrasound report, it is true that various grades of knee flexion are required for visualization of the structures (for example, the anterior cruciate ligament is visible only with maximal knee flexion). And it is obviously true, that the more the knee is flexed, the more the patella is pressed into its sulcus by the traction forces of the tendons.
