I can't quite get at the meaning of "materializza" in the following - can anyone help?

Per sostenere l’elemento durante la misurazione è stato realizzato un dispositivo di sostegno modulare che materializza il sistema di riferimentazione predefinito. I marker standard utilizzati dal sistema ATOS per il “montaggio” delle nuvole di punti ottenute dalle singole riprese sono stati posizionati sul dispositivo di sostegno, elemento rigido solidale con gli elementi da digitalizzare.
