"Perno" can translate as many things and I'm not sure what to use here ...!

Clarification request(s) and response
Ivana Micheli: 9:48pm Sep 21, 2006: A few pages on, I have a futher reference (which I just came across): - Il mezzo di trasporto veniva spinto su binari costituiti da tavole di legno e il perno serviva da guida.
Anna Maria Augustin: 1:01am Sep 22, 2006: Pivot seems to fit both according to the Eurodicautom.

pivot
Explanation:
A significant invention was the pivoting of the front wheels of carts. The pivot allowed the cart or wagon to turn quickly within a very small radius. A lightweight coach with small front wheels, indicating a pivoted assembly, was first mentioned in writing by a French knight, Bertrandon de la Brocqučre, who visited Hungary in 1433

Piu' avanti, nel testo, si parla anche di miniere. E' un lungo brano, leggi se hai tempo. Spero aiuti, non me ne intendo. Io sto uscendo a cena!
Approfitto e saluto tutte voi che state lavorando fino a tardi. Agree con Maryrose sulle tue traduzioni wild & esoteric! ;-)

coupling

Explanation:
I think this is the term you want, given the "vagoncino" and "binari" involved. Good luck - you have taken on yet another wildly esoteric job!

pin

Explanation:
if it is "perno di guida" or in this case "perno che serviva di guida' I think they are referring to a guide pin or pilot (pilot punch).
