Italian term or phrase: estensione (see context)
This is from a text describing instruments available for a Renaissance/Baroque music course (harpsichord section):

cembalo francese a due manuali, due registri di 8' e uno di 4', estensione Sol0-Mi5

I have this as a French double-manual harpsichord with two 8' registers and one 4' register. I am not at all sure, however, that "estensione" should be "extension", and I am also not sure Sol and Mi should be used instead of G and E.

I did see "ravalement" [a French term used in English]defined as "the extension of the original range of a harpsichord," but I am not sure it is correct, either.

I hope someone out there knows more than I do about how harpsichords are constructed and the correct terminology in this instance.

Asker: Hi Amy, Figured it would be something unexpected... Would you have a piece of text to paste here? I was not able to get in with the link. Thanks!! Lisa

Asker: I was talking about the JSTOR text... (just in case you were wondering, having pasted another link)...

Asker: Thanks, Amy! Also, if you are still around, would you agree that Sol0-Mi5 = GG-e3, and Mi0 [text has Si, I guess it's Mi]-Do5 = EE-c3?

Asker: Ack - Si is probably G#, so the second example is Si0-Do5...

Asker: Ack - Si is probably G#, so the second example is Si0-Do5. But in any case, I will research this better to be sure of my conversion...Thanks again!
