Art/Literary - Music
Italian term or phrase: canovaccio
From the bio of one of the docents for an early music course:

[Collaborations with various early music groups are opportunities to develop the idea of] spartito come “canovaccio”.... A sostegno di questa “filosofia” sono le ricerche sull’arte di diminuire e sulla prassi esecutiva antica, e le esperienze di improvvisazione...

First I had "draft". Now I am wondering if it should be "canvas", like a blank canvas upon which to improvise, etc.

canovaccio
Explanation:
It refers to a specific practice developed at a specific time, so it'd be inappropriate to translate it, just like you wouldn't translate Opera as "work" or "work of art". Anyway, hope it helps

Ah, so "vague plot outline", sort of like "draft". But, okay, I'll keep Canovaccio. Thank you Pablo and Thiago!

Notes to answerer
Asker: Actually, the text is describing a present-day musician who espouses this practice or philosophy. He's involved in philological research applied to early music performance. So, it may very well be appropriate to translate this term.
