Italian term or phrase: frase
It's still the text on the orchestra director, but this time it's a review of one of his recordings (Mascagni's Amica):

"Evita di cadere nell'enfasi di maniera e sottolineare con eccesso di sonorità i turghori della scrittura mascagnana."

Whatever way I try to put it, it still sounds awful!

That's because it is awful in Italian....
Explanation:
He carefully sidesteps the traps of emphasing manner and excessive sonority that Mascagni's turgid composition hurls in his path....

Not really that wonderful but it may give you a few ideas?

\"pitfalls\" rather than \"traps\"? And yes, poor old Mascagni...

Thanks, everyone. In the end I chose a combination of all the last 3 answers. I wish I could have given points to you all. I'm giving them to Angela just because she posted her answer first. Here's the final wording (which sounds the least awkward to my native English ear!):

"He avoids mannered emphasis and underscoring Mascagni's compositional surges with excessive sonority"

Thanks once again. I'm relieved to say that I've now finished translating the text!!!

Best wishes.

Sarah

agree writeaway: I also like it because it is less negative about poor Mascagni whose music is splendid in the hands of a good conductor (all verismo has the traits you define, IMO)

Explanation:
he/she manages to avoid mannered emphasis or compounding Mascagni's rhetorical ostentation with an excessively resonant quality of sound.

Yep, you're right.

It does sound awful!

A lot depends on the spin the author puts on \"turgori\". \"Turgid\", for example, is distinctly negative in English whereas the Italian could simply be indicating the high points of Mascagni\'s scoring without actually being critical.

What about this?

he/she manages to avoid mannered emphasis or any further augmentation of Mascagni\'s compositional surges with an excessively resonant quality of sound.

neutral writeaway: I am not sure the term rhetorical ostentation is the right one when referring to a musical composition (as opposed to literature)

Explanation:
Here*, he successfully avoids the pitfalls of echoing too closely the mannered emphasis and ostentatious/pompous/extravagant sonority so typical of Mascagni compositions.
