Italian term or phrase: capopesca
Yo fisherfolk! I'm working on a fishing site. What do they call the guy on larger boats who's in charge of the fishing gear?

Captains' mate
Explanation:
Well, as far as I know this is the second in charge, so if it's not the captain/skipper we're talking about, it must be the captain's mate

Thanks for putting me on the right track. This guy is indeed below the captain in rank. I ended up looking for the term on the Internet and found a site similar to the one I'm translating. FYI, here's what they say:
"Our Captain's Mate, a long time fisher fanatic knows all the tricks to keep the excitement and success adventurous, and our repeat customers can confirm this."

disagree  athena22: Generally the term "skipper" only refers to the Captain. Q: How big is the vessel? Are we talking merchant marine here?

-> Yest but may fit for small fishing ships , shipmasters may be for larger ones , I am not sure ?

Fishing Master

Explanation:
I'm really guessing here. The only web reference I found was the Eurodidactum
citation that Tayfun has already (very accurately) quoted. I can just tell you from my personal childhood experience that unless the guy with the gear is the
guy running the ship, we wouldn't have called him skipper or "skip." I'm not a fisherfolk; so perhaps someone else will have a more accurate idea.

agree  CLS Lexi-tech: I think the term is general enough to adapt to different situations and sizes of boats. Ciao
