Nell’ambito dell'organizzazione mineraria è emblematica la figura del "caruso". Il “caruso” è un bambino, spesso in età scolare, che per pochi soldi (chiamato in gergo soccorso morto) viene ceduto dai propri familiari “in affitto” ai picconieri della miniera; i familiari venivano pagati in anticipo per cui si creava un debito che il ragazzo era obbligato ad onorare spesso lavorando come uno schiavo privato di ogni diritto.
