|Italian term or phrase: stuoie|
|interior design. |
This comes from the captions of a photograph from an interior design magazine. (cushions by blahblah, bed by blahdiblah, rugs by yaddayadda, stuoie by....etc)
stuoia = mat
Straw mats, though my dictionary just gives mat. Here in Tuscany I have usually heard the word used for the kind of rollable straw mats used at the beach, but in your case they are those thick straw mats used as area rugs in interiors.
(Stuoina = door mat)

Aren't they just mats?
Ps, On reflection, you could just simplify to "open bookcase" in your other text - it should be clear what is meant from the context.
