momo savino: 15:05 Mar 4, 2007: I understand it is very difficult to translate this into other languages as, thanks God, such things do not happen in many countries. When (of course I am referring to legal matters such as a magistrate's petition) you read "collaboratore di giustizia" the person referred to is a former mafioso.
Are you sure that an informer is a collaboratore?, and that an informer can be held like a denunziatore (persona che prende l'iniziativa di denunziare)?

I know it is long. I hope someone knows a single word standing for it, but this is the meaning. A "Collaboratore DI (not della) giustizia is always a former criminal. So I think you can't just call him a "(State) witness"

If I had to translate this, the first time it comes across in the text I would say "The so called collaboratori di giustizia (former mafiosis who become witnesses) ... and then the following times I would live it in Italian.
I still think it is offensive (for a State witness) to be called the same as a "collaboratore di giustizia". It is the same as telling a witness he once was a criminal.

neutral Enza Longo: did you not see my answer? that's the term you're describing -you would normally say - xxx (name of person) turned state witness - we don't know for sure if it's a former criminal or not but state witness is the correct term in any case

neutral Adele Oliveri: If it's a documentary about the mafia, then a "collaboratore di giustizia" is definitely a former mafioso (generally convincted) who decides to help with the inquiries. but i agree that the expression suggested is too long...
