Ha! I thought these were two different things... or do they actually exist? How about "giant shark"? Any ideas?

Never heard of the Italian but whale sharks do exist!

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow filter feeding shark that is the largest living fish species. This distinctively-marked shark is the only member of its genus Rhincodon and its family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhinodontes before 1984), which is grouped into the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea. The species is believed to have originated about 60 million years ago.

un'altra idea da "Pinocchio".
Disney ce l'ha fatto vedere ingoiato da una balena, ma nell'originale era un Pesce-cane
definito anche sea-monster dal traduttore (un'immagine che i bambini amano molto)

di cui incollo un passaggio
"È molto grosso questo Pesce-cane che ci ha inghiottiti?" domandò il burattino.

"Imagine that his body is one mile long with- out counting his tail."

neutral  silvia b: anch'io avevo pensato anche a un riferimento a Pinocchio - è un "neutral" solo per mancanza di contesto (come nel caso della risposta di Ivana)

  -> Hai ragione, senza altro contsesto non si può far altro che "lanciare" idee a Simona, solo lei ha il testo e alla fine potrà scegliere

  -> As said above, it was simply another idea! The two words together reminded me immediately of Pinocchio. For Collodi the big fish was a Pesce-cane, for Disney a whale! ;-)
