Italian term or phrase: portante
I'm sure this can mean many things, but in this context, I'd be grateful for some help:
Il veicolo e' di tipo articolato a due casse e tre carrelli (due motori ed uno portante). This is talking about the type of train on the Genoa Light Railway. Thanks so much in advance.

carrying bogie
Explanation:
carrello portante = carrying bogie

as opposed to carrello motore = motor bogie

carrello: parte di un veicolo ferroviario costituito da un piccolo telaio a due o più assi che serve a sorreggere, insieme agli altri carrelli, il veicolo stesso e che può ruotare rispetto ad esso per adattarsi alle curve

bogie: an assembly of parts consisting of wheels and axles with necessary springs and structural members that support the main body of a rail car at each end (see IATE)

The bogie, or truck as it is called in the US, comes in many shapes and sizes but it is in its most developed form as the motor bogie of an electric or diesel locomotive or an EMU.

A bogie in the UK, or a wheel truck, or simply truck in the U.S., is a structure underneath a train to which wheel axles (and, hence, wheels) are attached through bearings. If they are used there are usually two for each carriage, wagon and locomotive, or alternatively, they are at the connections between the carriages or wagons.
