Other / a (probably alcoholic) drink in 1970s Italy
Italian term or phrase: un baby
A me un baby, per favore

It's a rather successsful, very confident man and he's at home with some friends in his very modern flat in 1970s - Babycham -? Doesn't sound very likely...

Clarification request(s) and response
Alessandra Renna: 20:58 Jul 30, 2008: Baby Martini is a trade product born in 1998. Are those older than this one?
Rachel Fell: 21:01 Jul 30, 2008: Hello Alessandra, thank you for your answer - yes, it's from a film from 1971 or so. Sort of hard living guy who'd be into Martinis, I think;-)
Alessandra Renna: 21:08 Jul 30, 2008: I'm such a mess!!! My answer is: are baby martinis in Grace and Umberto's suggestions older than the one on the market since 1998?
Grace Anderson: 21:09 Jul 30, 2008: "Baby Martini is a trade product born in 1998" - does this refer to the vermouth with the brand name "Martini" [George Clooney - No Martini, no Party] or the cocktail based on gin called a baby martini ?
Alessandra Renna: 21:10 Jul 30, 2008: my question is
Rachel Fell: 21:14 Jul 30, 2008: I'm not sure about the exact age of all of them (sorry, haven't had time to research all, but have looked a bit). I think just Martini (or maybe a small M - though not sure that he'd mind a standard sized one) is prob. enough for my purposes and avoids tricky questions of date of origin
Alessandra Renna: 21:16 Jul 30, 2008: this is the question: did the cocktail exist when the brand name "baby martini" was put on the market? or has the brand name inspired a new cocktail? I don't know
Rachel Fell: 21:17 Jul 30, 2008: @ Grace: I think it'd just be the cocktail based on the vermouth, as used in recipes from the 30s I suppose

Thank you Stefano and agreers - in fact, it was in a bar that he asked for it (I'd got the scenes mixed up when asking the Q.!) - and I don't like whisky either :-)

Ora si sta affermando la tendenza dei baby cocktail ovvero cocktail tradizionalmente alcolici trasformati in analcolici. Ma è una tendenza recente

agree Grace Anderson: I think this is probably right. I'll hide my answer. Ivana says its common in Tuscany and I don't know it! That's comforting - maybe I don't drink too much after all!

-> Thank you, Grace! "Baby Martini" was also my first thought though. I hadn't thought of looking in the "De Mauro" either :-P
