year-abroad; semester-abroad; foreign exchange visit; sabbatical
Without any context, I can't really help much. A student would be studying abroad; a professor might be on a foreign exchange visit, or taking a sabbatical. Anyone could be traveling for the purpose of studying. For example, there are educational trips led by Elderhostel or cruise ships with embarked professors.
