Italian to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Other / Candles used in churches/liturgies/processions | | Italian term or phrase: celostro | I’m preparing for a conference and I have a draft of one of the speech I’ll have to interpret.
Topic of the speech is the building of the Cathedral of Milan at the end of the XIV century, which was possible thanks to a fundraising network among the citizens.
Here there is a part in which the speaker describes how the donations were brought to the altar during a procession.
All’altare maggiore veniva poi condotto solennemente il **celostro**, cero di grandi dimensioni su cui venivano appese medaglie d’oro con la fronte del Duomo, corrispondenti alle offerte convertite dal tesoriere.
Is there a specific term in English? Shall I just say "a very large candle"?
Thank you for your help! |

| | processional candle | Explanation: I have just read a lengthy Catholic church website page in English on candles used during celibrations and there was nothing relevant.
Interestingly though, I discovered that there was a mediaeval English word (from when the English church was Catholic), "processionale" meaning a candle used in processions. Obviously, this was not necessarily the same type as a "celostro" but, if you want the listener to understand you, it could be the best option.
