Thanks to all. Choosing an answer has been difficult as there is just a short paragraph regarding the teenager who follows the fashion. Esoft has expressed the puzzlement that I have felt. Have decided to settle for Jane's prudent formulation.

I would prefer "catch up on them", even if it isn't a litteral translation, but I think it fits the context... otherwise:
"take action immediately", "act immediately", "find a solution quickly" etc...

Also, I different interpretations from my colleagues interesting;

"correre ai ripari" means to take immediate action to protect one self.

Although all my colleagues' translations, literal and semi-literal could all apply, I see potential for mis-interpretation.

The key thing is what the writer means.

does the writer mean that the he/she should "get used to it" because all the girl/boy's friends have it anyway and peer pressure being what it is, the girl/boy in subject will continue on that path?
