Italian term or phrase: oltre (see explanation)
another term I can't manage to "recreate" in English... the same text about a painter's art , which is also a means to go "oltre" (i.e. it doesn't only represent what you see in the picture, but a whole world beyond it, a bit like looking at a painting of an old boot and thinking about the harsh world of work etc...).
any tips? ta!

Clarification request(s) and response
Fiorsam: 8:06pm Jul 31, 2006: again, it would be helpful to have the context in which the word appears.
lanzarotti: 8:40pm Jul 31, 2006: well, the text doesn't go into details too much... the explanation of "altro" and "oltre" was given to me by the author of the text...
here you are anyway, and thank you all for your help!

"Il segno apre nuovi spazi a ciò che sta oltre"

(...)

"L'apertura di ciò che sta oltre è il guadagno dell'arte: se la barbarie è ciò che è "oltre" e "altro", la pittura annuncia una presenza che non è a nostra disposizione"

(...)

"L'invito alla mostra è l'invito quindi a cogliere la presenza dell'altro e dell'oltre"
lanzarotti: 2:00pm Aug 1, 2006: into the beyond... - Thank you all for your help, I am still musing on the various options... I like the sound of "into the beyond", but it sort of gives me the idea that this "beyond" is something spiritual, while, in my text, it may not necessarily be so (it could refer to hard work or something like that) - am I wrong? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it... :)

to transcend
Explanation:
But, of course, it depends on what verbe precedes "oltre". Can you give the entire sentence rather than only an explanation?

Explanation:
this is one possibility although I think it would help to have the whole sentence in Italian

-> good idea - I wonder whether people who write this kind of stuff really know what they mean in the first place ;-)

beyondness

Explanation:

"The beyondness of things" è' il titolo di un CD di John Barry.
Mi è venuta in mente questa parola !!! Una manciata di contesti che (forse) possono giustificare la mia idea.

"Beyondness" appare come una sorta di categoria del trascendentale in questo titolo di un articolo accademico

Stafford, Barbara Maria 1941- "Leveling the New Old Transcendence: Cognitive Coherence in the Era of Beyondness"
New Literary History - Volume 35, Number 2, Spring 2004, pp. 321-338
The Johns Hopkins University Press

Infine un altro articolo accademico sulla 'transculture' e gli 'intercultural encounters'

"More than that, however, such lived experience of the transcultural also entails an experience of that ‘beyondness,’ I referred to above. As Nicolescu writes, “The transcultural designates the opening of all cultures to that which crosses them and transcends them.” [8]"

agree Linda 969: I like *reward*; *art rewards us with glimpses of what lies beyond*, perhaps ?//"il guadagno dell'arte" is pretty cryptic, though ...
55 mins
-> I like it. But I'm not sure it translates "il guadagno dell'arte" which seems to imply "art's own reward"
