Italian to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Philosophy / art theory | | Italian term or phrase: io come unico articolo di fede | As you can see from the context, this is presented as a quote. Does anyone have any idea of the 'official' translation... I seem to have mislaid my complete works of Nietzsche ;-)
Context:

26 mins confidence: peer agreement (net): +2 I [...] our oldest article of faith
Explanation: This looks like a likely candidate:
"We have borrowed the concept of unity from our 'I' concept -- our oldest article of faith."

| Reference: /EGO CONCEPT - OUR OLDEST ARTICLE OF FAITH/
Reference information: "There are, for Nietzsche, no “things,” no existences that stand apart in any way from all of existence. All exist only in the web-like structure of Verhängnis and exist in no other sense. Our conception of individual existences is a function of our error regarding the sense of unity. “We need ‘unities’ in order to be able to reckon: that does not mean we must suppose that such unities exist. We have borrowed the concept of unity FROM OUR ‘EGO’CONCEPT —OUR OLDEST ARTICLE OF FAITH. If we did not hold ourselves to be unities, we would never have formed the concept ‘thing.’"
"This ego, "our oldest article of faith" (WP 635), is, in Nietzsche's view, another word for the subject. As he says of the subject that it is "not ..."
"The consequence of these examples is simple: the presupposition of reason leads us into the realm of "crude fetishism." As Nietzsche states in Twilight of the Idols,
Everywhere it sees a doer and doing; it believes in will as the cause; it believes in
the ego, in the ego as being, in the ego as substance, and it projects this faith in the
ego-substance upon all things —only thereby does it first create the concept of
‘thing.’ Everywhere ‘being’ is projected by thought, pushed underneath, as the
cause; the concept of being follows, and is the derivative of, the concept of ego
("Reason in Philosophy" 5)".

"Pensiamo appunto alla morte di Dio o dell’Io sono. Nessuno probabilmente sosterrebbe, dopo essere diventato cieco, che quanto prima vedeva è morto o ha cessato di esistere, mentre l’uomo moderno sostiene, dopo essere diventato un ego (dopo aver cioè chiuso gliocchi dello spirito e aperto quelli del corpo), che quel Dio o quell’Io sono che prima vedevaè morto o ha cessato di esistere."
