Explanation:
This is clearly what the Italian says, even if its meaning is obscure. I can't see any other translation that would be accurate.
The "ego" of Freudian fame, is the "io" in Italian.

disagree  Federico81: There is a huge difference in philosophy between ego and self. The best translation of io in this context is no doubt "self", because ego would involve a freudian (and individual) accent that is not present in the original text
