This is how the client describes "tensione":
“tensione” è diverso da “tendenza”; “tensione” implies that there is something that keeps me in a state of attentive, or striving, or responsible, or loving, etc. “tension” with respect to it. Per esempio, si dice comunemente “la tensione morale”. As you said in your explanation, here "tensione" is near to the concept of "striving to attain something". I think also the verb "to pursue" may fit.

Asker: thanks giulia. I wanted to limit this question to answerers who are native Italian or English but seemingly you can't and so I had to opt for natives of "target language" only instead. Or maybe it is just Monday morning and I missed something.

I would put it this way. Intention is that quality of aware direction of our life, such as when driving or cycling, where too much tension creates havoc and not enough also. We use it when writing or translating or playing sports that do not require strength but guided action. This seems a good fit for your text.
