Italian term or phrase: il teatro di regia
Quando il teatro non poteva ancora contare su magistrali registi e quindi ***il teatro di regia*** era ancors di la da venire...
Anyone have suggestions? Maybe there is a standard term that I don't know? Thanks.

directed theatre
Explanation:
I can't think of anything off hand but I might use "directed' theatre" in inverted commas.

Explanation:
I'm just guessing, don't have any reference, but it sounds quite good.

Explanation:
Check these links out; it would seem that "teatro di regia" is the classical structure as compared to "teatro contemporaneo".
However, I would not know how to express this concept, having zero background in the theatre.....
