Potreste aiutarmi a capire questo: "Gli si stava gonfiando la faccia. Dov’erano finiti gli zigomi? Le guance infossate? Assomigliava a un cinese. Aveva trentasei anni e sembrava che ne avesse cinquanta."
É dal romanzo "Come Dio comanda" di Ammaniti.

Infossate qui vorrá dire una cosa positiva, credo... In contrasto con la faccia gonfia - poco attraente - di oggi.

Explanation:
In realtà, con buona pace di Ammaniti e dei suoi ammiratori, mi sembra che la scelta dell'aggettivo "infossate" accompagnato a "guance" sia poco felice, perché in genere ciò è indice di poca salute, perciò poco attraente e positivo.
Però, se poco prima si parla di zigomi e in generale di un viso più affilato e che era bello, allora potrebbe essere considerato caratteristica positiva, anche se lo scrittore avrebbe dovuto sottolineare gli zigomi alti, piuttosto che le guance infossate.

Sì, direi che puoi andare sul sicuro con "hollow cheeks", visto che l'autore ci fa sentire quel che il personaggio pensa di sé. È che "guance infossate" dà l'idea di una persona magra in modo malsano, mentre invece, se si vuol fare un complimento, si può dire "volto affilato, dagli zigomi alti", come quello del bellissimo attore Jonathan Rhys-Myers;-)

Asker: Ciao Sofia! Grazie della risposta. Ecco un po' piú di contesto, o comunque se ne trova di piú al link che ci ho copiato in alto. "Fermo davanti al cesso, una mano contro il muro, guardava il proprio riflesso nell’acqua nera in fondo alla tazza. Gli si stava gonfiando la faccia. Dov’erano finiti gli zigomi? Le guance infossate? Assomigliava a un cinese. Aveva trentasei anni e sembrava che ne avesse cinquanta. Nell’ultimo periodo aveva preso parecchi chili. Non aveva avuto il coraggio di salire su una bilancia, ma sapeva che era così." Che ne pensi/pensate cosí? Bea
