Italian term or phrase: egli è il primo

Please forgive me asking three questions in a row on the same piece! This is a piece of poetry written by a priest/poet for a friend's wedding (in 1818, so the language is a little dated), and I'm a little confused:

Does he mean the wine? I take it "primo" means "best" here? So why does he use the feminine article in the first sentence?

All help appreciated; TIA :)

"La Canina prelibata/ di Ravenna, nonché quella/ uva rossa così grata/ che fiammeggia in Brisighella,/ fan dei vini a parer mio/ pien di forza, pien di brio./ Rubicondo più del sangue/***egli è il primo***, e lo darei/ solo chi s’invecchia e langue."

Explanation:
"primo" potrebbe riferirsi al fatto che la Cagnina è un vino novelo. Ma potrebbe anche voler dire il migliore. A te la scelta.

Thanks Cynthia - in the end I went for "best" as I thought it fitted the context best, but the term may well refer to the fact that it's a "novello" wine. Thanks everyone :-)

Explanation:
Maybe this could be an idea... must means "mosto=first stage of the wine cycle" and something not to miss out at the same time. Wasn't able to check if the wine you're talking about is actually a must... ;) so just take mine as a simple hint...
