Ships, Sailing, Maritime / Merchant shipping/ferry court case
Italian term or phrase: compartimento marittimo di appartenenza
This appears in an information list compiled by one of the officials representing one of the sides of a court case. The case is regarding an accident on a ferry line and this item is one of hte details held of the defendant.

Other items about the defendant in the list are:

"i dati anagrafici e recapiti
matricola di iscrizione
compartimento marittimo di appartenenza
..."

I have translated this as "maritime area membership"

It could be that Italy and England have different ways of assigning area memberships in this respect, but is there a better way of translating this? Or is my own version OK?

Maritime Department (membership)
Explanation:

I would use department for compartimento
and area for zona/direzione

ciao Lara, I understand your point of view. On the other hand a compartimento is a part of a larger whole (Zona/Direzione marittima).

Thank you. "Maritime Authority" was the best.
Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you. The problem is IMO it is best to avoid "department" when describing administrative areas, particularly here as this word has another meaning in English. Thank you for your help anyway.

Asker: Yes thanks. I was aware of the meaning of the meaning of compartimento and the Wikipedia entry, which is why I used "area" originally. I was hoping there might be an official UK term for this. Thank you.
