Censorship 12:14 Jun 16
I strongly feel that a translator should not "tone down" vulgarity, because she/he feels "it is not necessary" (I would say the same about exaggeration).A translator can always negotiate things with an author and even refuse to translate, but this is not just about censorship. On TV when I see Italian versions of telefilms that I know well in the original English version, very often all the colourful, rich language, which is often one of the great attractions of some series, has been clinically removed. The result is hardly worth watching and very disappointing. |
