Italian term or phrase: inversione di scaletta
Abbandonai i futili tentativi di curva e raggiunsi la valle con diagonali e **inversione di scaletta***.

A text about someone trying to ski in fresh snow without a clue about what to do. He is, however, very skilled in slalom, downhill etc, so only fresh snow is a problem.

I understand 'diagonale' refers to diagonal strides (used in cross country skiing), but I am baffled by the other expression.

Any skiing experts out there?
thank you.

downhill side-stepping
Explanation:
based on the discussion above and because typical side-stepping is used to get uphill. You could go with "reverse side-stepping" but that's not as clear to me.
