Italian term or phrase: tensione limite/sollecitazione limite

\"Machines for conducting elongation, torque, rotation, proof load, breaking strength, and cyclic-tension fatigue tests are available with a variety of capacities. Any of these tests can be conducted with the test section of the cable at extreme temperatures. All tension measuring instrumentation has an accuracy of 1.0 percent of full scale. Available load cell capacity\'s range from 10/44.5 pounds/N to 400,000/1,779.4 pounds/kN.

Available test machines include:

Maximum Tension, pounds
Maximum Specimen, Length, feet\"

\"The maximum stress criterion, also known as the normal stress, Coulomb, or Rankine criterion, is often used to predict the failure of brittle materials.
The maximum stress criterion states that failure occurs when the maximum (normal) principal stress reaches either the uniaxial tension strength st, or the uniaxial compression strength sc,\"

maximum, minimum yield stress

Explanation:

Tensione= tension (pulling force), che e' un tipo di 'stress'(force on a member divided by the area which carries the force) , mentre 'strain' e' la deformazione (change in length) che risulta dallo stress.

If you don't stop stressing me, I'll get strained and my nose will get all bent out of shape!

Yield stress: the stress at which noticable, suddenly increased deformation (strain!) occurs under slowly increasing load.

((Penguin Dictionary of Engineering)

tensione limite (max e min) = \"maximum and minimum tensile stress\"
sollecitazione limite (max e min) = \"maximum and minimum yield stress\"

Vedi per esempio questo sito: http://www.fema.gov/library/350ch3.pdf

Aggiungo ancora:

Sempre dallo stesso Penguin:

Tensile strength: Loose abbrevitation for \"ultimate tensile stress\". It is much higher than the greates safe stress.

Ultimate tensile stress, ultimate strength, breaking strength: the tensio at which a specimen breaks, divided by its original area before testing began.

So perhaps the most correct adjectives are minimum (first deformation) and ultimate (breakage point)?

Not sure, but this should help!
