In Italian is short for Piede quadrato which is a unit of measurement for leather. I worked for many years in the footwear indurstry!

that 1a stands for leather of 1st choice. You can have different quality of leather, 1st-2nd choice mainly.

neutral  Rachel Fell: Hi Raffaella: interesting that they measure in "feet" (by the way, only putting neutral because I didn't know the meaning of the abbreviation)

  -> yes...well...in my ANCI (Italian Shoe Industry Association) dictionary they translated Piede Quadrato (Pq.) for leather as Foot (Feet). ;)
