Italian term or phrase: chiusura a serafino
It is a cotton shirt in which the front opening (with buttons or poppers) only goes halfway down the chest, ie the shirt will have to be pulled off over the head. Anyone know the proper English tecnical term?

"chiusura a serafino" here represents what I would call "grandad style front": http://www.modafil.it/SingoloMst.jsp?art=M745879 but it would really depend on your context - thermal nightwear or cotton shirts yes; high-end catwalk no!

agree  Rachel Fell: nice link:) -it might need to be "overhead grandad collar", as otherwise it cd. open all the way down, the grandad bit referring t the actual collar strictly spking http://www.allwords.com/word-grandad collar.html

agree  Angela Arnone: I'd say mid-fastening "grandad shirt" rather than "overhead" (?).
