Italian term or phrase: antichi querco-carpineti planiziali
Context:

ancient oak-hornbeam woodlands
Explanation:
Planiziali is a variant of 'planiziari', you could do without this adjective in English since you shall have to specify that detail when translating "che un tempo ricoprivano gran parte della pianura padana".

Explanation:
I would now suggest that, from the context, "planiziale" means of the plain, of the lowland, hence a very different kind of forest from that of the hill and mountains. The rest I already said in the discussion post. "Carpine" is hornbeam, hence "carpineto" is a hornbeam wood, "querco-carpineto" is a wood of oak and hornbeam, and "antichi querco-carpineti" are the ancient forests of oak and hornbeam.
