Explanation:
the name of Dublin in Irish is

Baile Átha Cliath and this is the postmarks on stamps.

Baile=Town

Átha= ford (lowest crossing point of river)

Cliath=hurdles or wattles
I grew up right beside the place where this ford was which joined the North road to cross the river (which flows West to East) and continue South into the first settlement on the south bank.
The earliest bridge was built at this site as well and is now
Father Matthew or Church St Bridge.

And yes, Gisella and Wiki is right as Ushers Island (no longer an island) is on the south bank

Incidentally, the name "Dublin" derives from Norse mispronunciation of Dubh Linn (should be pronounced as Dove Linn) which means Black Pool (near where the stream Poddle, now mostly underground, joined the river Liffey)

the hurdles/wattles were probably osiers (willow) as there was a good supply in the area. They are also pliable so easy to weave
