Italian term or phrase: franchezza di vitigno
Describing a Malbec:

If you google 'varietal character', you will find that it describes how much a wine presents its inherent grape aromas, i.e. precisely what 'franchezza di vitigno' means. Hence my option.

directness

Explanation:
e.g. a directness of flavour

The renowned Watson's wine glossary gives 'direct' for 'franco', and popular wine writer Jancis Robinson has used 'directness' on her site too.

HTH :)
