Nelle residenze imperiali il circo sostituisce, come spazio per spettacoli, il teatro. La sostituzione avviene gradualmente: in epoca augustea abbiamo solo teatri (Pianosa, Posillipo, Anzio), in età domizaneo-adrianea i due edifici sembrare coesistere (Albano? Boville? Anzio?, Villa Adriana?, ma già in epoca antonina prevale il circo (Lorium, circo Variano) per poi divenire parte integrante del disegno dei palazzi tardo-imperiali.
