Nel V secolo il sepolcreto è abbandonato, mentre sull’isola sono edificate diverse fortezze in posizioni dominanti, a controllo delle risorse minerarie e degli imbarchi. Estrazione e commercio del ferro, si svolgono ancora sotto il controllo di Populonia, che gode della protezione di Siracusa, ora padrona del mare.
