Le aggiunte delle materie prime sono calcolate in peso, facendo riferimento a 100 Kg di sabbia. Tutti i componenti la miscela sono in polvere e le dimensioni dei grani hanno una grande importanza per la riuscita della fusione. Se le polveri sono troppo fini vi sono problemi di spolverio, cioè di dispersione del prodotto nella camera fusoria e nell'ambiente attraverso i fumi, prima che abbia avuto il tempo per reagire.
