Quindi non c'era da aver troppa paura: il timore di essere puniti, che era salito alle stelle, tornò nuovamente basso, come è di solito. Finalmente si poté tirare un sospiro di sollievo: non sarebbe successo un bel niente. Nessuno avrebbe punito nessuno, salvo qualche inevitabile caso occasionale, che sarebbe servito come scotto dell'intera operazione.

Scotto = écot, contribution.
Servire d'écot? de tribut? à toute cette opération?

Explanation:
Comme je ne sais pas dans quel temps la traduction est rédigée, j'en reste au présent.

La phrase est un peu bizarre. Je pense à "pagare lo scotto": de temps en temps un malheureux fait les frais de toute cette histoire.

Comme il y a "che sarebbe servito come scotto dell'intera operazione" le sens pourrait être aussi: "dont on se sert pour justifier toute cette entreprise"; qui sert d'excuse à toute cette entreprise
