L’unità di elaborazione in sicurezza del sottosistema LEU ha una architettura hardware del tipo 2 su 2; ogni sezione dell’architettura è dotata di un microcalcolatore indipendente, e l’hardware di interfaccia verso l’ambiente non è identico per le due sezioni. Le due sezioni possono scambiarsi dati attraverso linee seriali dedicate. I real time clock delle due sezioni sono sincronizzati per mezzo di un segnale generato da una delle sezioni.
La singola sezione contiene quindi un microprocessore CISC del tipo Motorola 68360 che gestisce le funzionalità logiche e di interfaccia verso il resto del sottosistema. All’interno dell’unità di elaborazione è inoltre presente un watch-dog; in caso di *caduta del watch-dog* l'esecuzione del SW Applicativo viene interrotta, così come le comunicazioni con gli altri sottosistemi.
