Ma dove si trovano queste Indie? Ecco il contesto:
Dal XV al XVII secolo Vitré fu una delle città bretoni più attive: tela di canapa, panni di lana, calze in cotone si vendevano in Francia, Inghilterra, Spagna, Germania e, più tardi, fino in America e nelle Indie.
Ho alcune idee:

"le Indie" ist keine klare Bezeichung: Indie Orientali, Indie del Sud e Indie Occidentali sind die Möglichkeiten in der italienischen Sprache.
Ich habe unter "Stadt Vitré und Geschichte" geschaut, bin aber zu nichts gekommen. Daher würde ich einfach mit Kolonien übersetzen: Der italienische Text ist sowieso MMN nicht präziser.

Explanation:
wäre mein Vorschlag. Auf Englisch heißen sie auch "the West Indies". Gemeint werden die Inseln in der Karibik.
Ich finde diesen Terminus regelmäßig in englischen Zeitschriften über Briefmarken.
