O metodă care a adus progrese uriaşe în diagnosticarea bolilor coloanei este CT-ul. Este o metodă non-invazivă şi nedureroasă şi care prin recompunerea imaginii coloanei cu ajutorul unor programe pe computer vizualizează structurile coloanei. RMN-ul este o metodă şi mai recentă care produce oscilaţia nucleilor cu ajutorul unui câmp electromagnetic. Energia acestor nuclei este captată, înregistrată şi transformată de un computer în imagini tridimensionale. Este foarte utilă în diagnosticarea tumorilor primitive sau secundare ale coloanei şi a discurilor degenerate. Este atât de precisă, încât permite evidenţierea leziunilor discale chiar şi la pacienţii fără manifestări clinice.
