La expresión española, que tiene este mismo significado, posee algunas variantes. Hay quien dice "matar mosquitos a cañonazos" o "matar pulgas a cañonazos"

Personalmente, creo que la expresion se refiere sobre todo a la inutilidad del intento y no a la desproporcion de los medios utilizados para conseguirlo. Otra expresion que tambien quiere decir lo mismo: gastar polvora en salvas
