Explanation:
Más que "aficionados" en el sentido de opuesto a "profesionales", creo que aquí se refiere a personas verdaderamente aficionadas a determinado tema, que lo conocen bien, "no profanos", como se suele decir.

La palabra que se me ocurre para traducirlo es "connaisseurs", galicismo bastante utilizado en español.

Perfecto! porque la historia se desarrolla ademas en Francia y el texto en italiano usa la palabra "amatori" con doble sentido. Creo que Connaisseurs se adapta muy bien a todo ello!
