一定の会計期間における収益とこれに対応する費用とを確定し、収益から費用を差し引いて利益を算出すること。短期間しか存続しない企業の場合には、存続期間全体の損益計算を行うことができるが、現代企業は永続するとされ、存続期間を通じた損益計算を実施することはできないので、代わって会計期間で区切った損益計算を行うことになる。この場合、費用・収益対応の原則や発生主義の原則あるいは継続性の原則などが重要な役割を演じることになる。また、期間損益計算を行う場合に、損益法や財産法などの手法が適用される。
