This term is used to describe the interior of an older home. It appears as follows:

このように和室に暖炉を備えるということ自体は明治時代に多く行われた方法だが、ここに****を使ったことや、棚板にかすかにカーブをつけたり、暖炉庇を円弧形のデザインにしたりすること、そして全体の平面分割の巧みさといった手法は独特のものである。

Explanation:
I see a problem (difficulty) is that what is referred to as 平面 is not really a flat surface. I took it to be a view, or what you can see. Maybe you can come up with a better word, but does this idea work?
