Japanese term or phrase: 3Fの約2/3が吹き抜けで明るく開放的な図書館
I'm trying to find a good way of expressing 吹き抜け in English. I've looked up images online so I understand what it is...kind of an open gallery-style space looking out over the lower levels...Can anybody think of a good English translation?

atrium
Explanation:
For the term 吹き抜け, I think atrium would do. For the above phrase, how about "2/3 of the library's 3rd floor consisting of an atrium with a bright and open space".

agree  Yuki Okada: 私はatrium良いと思いますよ。明るく開放的ならきっと天窓、ないしそれなりの明かりもあるだろうし。中庭ならcourtyardでしょう。

Reference: Comment: Choosing between atrium and open ceiling space

Reference information:
If it is multi-sorey commercial building, "atrium" (suggested by Kanazawa-san) may be a good way of expressing 吹き抜け.

In the case of houses and small buldings, "open ceiling space" (as seen in the references given by cinefil-san) seems to be a more appropriate choice.

The following is the Wikipedia definition of atrium:
In modern architecture, an atrium (plural atria) is a large open space, often several stories high and having a glazed roof and/or large windows, often situated within an office building and usually located immediately beyond the main entrance doors.
