agree  Kurt Hammond: Agreed. Typical "closing dates" are the 20th or 25th of the month. Payments arriving after that have to wait another month. So in your example, an invoice arriving on Aug 26 would not be paid until Oct 31.

agree  Maynard Hogg: I especially like the way this translation avoids the "closing date" verbosity, but one would not be so lucky with 20日締め.

disagree  Kurt Hammond: This is not quite correct. There is a date they close the books i nthe previous month. If the invoice arrives one day after that you have to wait an additional month for your payment.

  -> Actually, since in this case the invoice is EOM, anything bought during a certain month would be invoiced that month, and it would be due the last day of the following month. However, I do understand your point. Could also write, "Net monthly account."

Explanation:
It all depends on how precise one has to be. My work for major Japanese semiconductor manufactures has payment terms 20日締め翌々々月月末払い. In English conversation, I just say "100 days net." That's a far cry from my American clients' "three business days."
Looking up "30 days net", I see that English sources phrase "from receipt of invoice," "from invoice date", etc. I suppose that one could say that Japanese companies specify the invoice dates.

Benjamin¥'s URL (http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?type=RESO... defines ¥"Net 30¥" ¥"Payment 30 days after invoice¥", but my Google search revealed that things are not that simple. (Well, maybe in a seller¥'s market, but certainly not in J-E translation in Japan.) For starters, I¥'d amend that to ¥"after *effective date* of invoice. The Devil is in the details: date on invoice, date received, closing date?

Make that ¥"implied closing date¥"--a detail relegated to the fine print in English contexts. Kanji allows Japanese to be specific up front.
