in relation to../within the context of their relationship
Japanese to English translations [PRO] Marketing - Cosmetics, Beauty
Japanese term or phrase:関連させる/関連付け
I'm having trouble getting my English understanding of this term to conform with its usages in this paper.
Associate/relate to/link? What are some other options and how can I best make them fit?
The context is an instructor's guide to a skin care manual for use in beauty consultants' training.
XXX名称から、YYYの働きまで関連させながら理解させる *I think by --から...まで, it means from one point to another point in the text.
A/B/Cの項目は関連付け説明する。 *Similar to above, it's referring to 項目 (items) in the text.
表皮の4層の名称と役割、構造を関連付けて理解できるよう説明する。 *Here, I'm not sure what it is saying to link/associate/relate to what...the names, roles, and structures of the four layers of the epidermis? or the names of the four layers of the epidermis with their roles and structures, maybe?
Explanation: I can only give you my instinctive answer - I hope you have access to the manual as well, then the answer might be there.
I sense from these "関連..." that the writer is trying to instruct the instructors to explain things by not just breaking them apart and isolating each other (for example, each skin layer), but also within the context of their relationship. So phrases like "in relation to each..." "within the relationship of one x to another x" "within the context of their relationship" might suit here.
Thanks to all for your help. Rie-san, your explanation helped clarify it in my mind -- and Cinefil-san, thank you for the wonderful reference info. It's very useful! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
To make sure although there may be no difference..

If it means simply 'from one point to another point', I think there is no comma in general. I'm not sure about 'XXX名称’, but I guess 'XXX名称から' means 'by hearing XXX名称', that is, XXX名称 asociate/relate to/link 'YYYの働き’. I apologize if you mean the same thing.
表皮の4層の名称と役割、構造を関連付けて: regarding the four layers of the epidermis, the names AND the roles AND the structures are all linked/.../..., or the names are linked/.../... their roles and structures.
