Japanese term or phrase: 待機晩成型
To describe a person. I think these are the right kanji (it was spoken): TA-I-KI-BA-N-SE-I-GA-TA

It seems to break down as "standby" "late bloomer" (??!) - which makes no sense to me!

Thanks all.

disagree  overseas: The translation "great talents mature late" is acceptable, but the first two Kanjis should have been ツ邏

  -> Actually,that's what I indicated.

disagree  humbird: Your correction of 大器 is good. However, original expression is noun. Complete sentence such as yours is inappropriate. Just "later bloomer"would do.

  -> This may be appropriate, depending on the context. However, you are certainly entitled to voice your own opinion, Susan.

agree  tappi_k: and 大器晩成 it is indeedy! (and i don't understand the two 'disagree' votes above - Kathy herself gives the examples of late-bloomer/late developer/slow-growing all meaning the same thing as her header 'Great talents (that) mature late';-)

agree  Minoru Kuwahara: i would agree. believe or not, i was murmuring this exact word in a car the other day. correction for 大器 is necessary. ; ) ... -
