agree  tuapleepasaa: tricky phrase with its meaning changed over time. it comes from an old verb "omu" written "怖む", as u see, it connotes fear or "chicken out". most fitting to the context. -

I’m interpreting it a little differently from izziS...

To “chicken out” means to get cowardly about something. I sense a different nuance with a "how dare you do this?" feeling incorporated into it.
